Far too many of us are still trying to keep up with The Jones’ and whatever they have we must have as well.

There’s no law which forces us to buy top name designer clothes when something off the rack at a discount place like Marshall’s will serve the same purpose. Just because a co-worker has just bought something with Gucci’s name on it, doesn’t mean we must do the same. Just because a good friend of yours has just bought a brand new BMW, doesn’t mean you can’t buy a gently used GM car.

Being frugal means not spending money merely for the sake of spending to create an image to others that you’re just as good as they are. Do you have to buy a $4 latte at Starbucks when a cup of Joe from the office coffee pot with some milk/cream will serve the same purpose.

Benjamin Franklin was correct when he said, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” We must stop living for the now and look forwards to when we retired. A perfect example of this involved me.

Working for NYCity workers had been given an option for their pension so they could retired as much as seven years sooner without any decrease in their pension due to an early retirement. However this meant paying an arrearage for a few and an additional 4.3% into the pension plan, as well as the regular 3% contribution on each paycheck, with 25 years of service and older than 55. Many balked at this idea, they wanted their money NOW. I said this might change as each new contract got signed. On the first new contract 4.3% became 2.85% [the arrearage had long since stopped], some individuals felt sorry that they didn’t take this option when they could have. This wasn’t as much as when the second new contract got signed, the 3% was eliminated after 10 years of work, 2.85% got reduced to 1.85% which would stop after 30 years of work. Now quite a lot of individuals regretted not having taken the option when they could have, especially they were closer to retirement age and would now have to work to age 62 for full benefits. Having taken the option, I could choose when I wanted to retire, which for me at age 59.

There are many ways of being frugal without having any real impact on living, and this books covers a great deal of them. Having been written in a manner which sounds as if someone is talking to its readers make this book easy to follow and absorb. While some of the ideas presented here are more suitable to home owners, anyone reading this book can benefit to different extends based on their own current circumstances from the rest of the book.

While I had obtained this book as a free downloaded when it had been offered [being frugal here as from getting books to read/review] it’s a book which others should look at getting so they might be able to live more sensibly which is why I’ve given this book 5 STARS.

pointless information that i thought was common sense...
It's nothing you haven't read before and not worth the read. Most of the book just repeats the same thing over and over..common sense tells you to stop buying coffee drinks and make it at home. But to stop watching TV because the commercials are too tempting? Really?
