An innocent woman was hanged in 1923 and Hitchcock would spend the next fifty odd years telling us of her innocence, but in the nicest possible way -by entertaining us. Failure to acknowledge the historical context from which Hitchcock's cinema emerged has led to unwarranted psychological speculation which undermines that basic message. This book explores that context both in terms of the often violent social change that the 20th century brought with it, but also the history of the medium of cinema itself.

I've only read about 10% but the prose is stodgy and academic (in the worst sense), making for a tiresome read. More irritating is numerous "typos" such as "then" instead of "than," "complemented" for "complimented," and "Che Sera Sera" identified as the song from the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much... a decent proofreader, preferably with basic knowledge of Hitchcock (and familiarity with The Elements of Style...), could easily improve the book. I may update this review after plodding through the rest of the book but don't hold your breath.

Hitchcock in Context Stephane Duckett 9781910229071 Books Reviews

"Hitchcock in Context seemingly appeared out of the blue... when I eventually finished reading it I felt as though I was seeing Hitchcock through fresh eyes & I suspect Duckett has gotten closer to revealing the real Hitchcock then any other author I've read before... This is an essential purchase for anyone interested in learning something new about Hitchcock. In the 12 months I've owned a copy I've already reread it more times than Spoto's Dark side of Genius which I've owned since the 1980s!" - David Pattern
