Brandon knows today will be his last. He has been dreading this moment his entire life. Scientists had long ago predicted the year and the day when all living things, everything Brandon has come to know, would go up in flames – the day Earth hit the Gertrude Threshold.
For seventy years, Brandon had aged with the sun. He’d watched it grow bigger and the Warming fry the planet. Science was powerless to stop it. Plants withered. Oceans dried up. Humanity went mad. People sought safety underground. Radiation poisoned the world they left behind above.
Now, Brandon languishes on his deathbed. He looks after his grandson, Ky, and again wonders what survival left him with. Ky’s parents, John and Ellen, wander throughout the underground tunnels. Ellen mourns the loss of everything she and her child will never experience. Desperate to spend his final hours with the man he has grown to love, John abandons his wife and child.
Brandon, his family, and the underground survivors have no future, only the past, and less than 24 hours to reclaim the years the Warming stole while Earth begins to fall apart around them.

Comparisons to Ray Bradbury by other reviewers left me skeptical. As a Bradbury fan, however, I had to give this author a try. And I was not disappointed. It is a brilliant work of fiction pulling the reader to think deeply about the importance of relationships and what it means to be human. It is a gut-wrenching end of the world tale that somehow gives one hope. Very well done and we will be looking forward to more from Mr. Brooks.Product details

The Gertrude Threshold A Novella eBook Christopher Brooks Reviews
A dark view of the future of global warming is an original, exciting read...and far too short.
This was a really well-written, engaging picture of the end of the world. The story follows several characters as they make crucial decisions about how they will spend their last moments on Earth. This was a beautifully told, character-driven drama in a science-fiction setting. It was a quick read, which was good since I had trouble putting it down!
An excellent piece of science fiction writing and, like the best sci-fi (either in books, TV or film), has more to say about the human condition than science. Brooks creates a mosaic of characters living their own personal apocalypse as the physical world decays around them, but still finding pleasures in love and movies. The writing is sharp, tight, intelligent and the characters are richly drawn. Brooks' debut showcases a talent worth discovering and following. I'm eager to see what he'll do next.
Excellent story about the end of the world and the people involved.
It's a quick read, very intense and refreshing. This story isn't about
the science, it's about a very human drama. Read it. You'll like it.
The Gertrude Threshold A Novella, by Christopher Brooks, was by far one of the best works of science fiction that I have read in long time! The setting is so depressing yet the author has written something that is anything but depressing. It is an emotional and honest text that offers a glimmer of happiness even on the darkest day of the earth. The characters are captivating and I found each of their stories completely fascinating. I was particularly overjoyed that John was able to fully live! )
This work has completely whet my appetite and I look forward to seeing what Brooks writes next! I will be ordering my hard-copy to add to my personal library!
It's the end of the world—the actual day of the apocalypse—but there will be no post-apocalyptic world to wander. On this day—the day of the Gertrude Threshold —the sun will finish burning humanity away.
This interesting novella explores how one family handles its last day. Brendan, the patriarch, remembers his past. His son, John, explores a path not taken. John's wife, Ellen, struggles with her faith and searches for new human connections. John and Ellen leave their son, Ky, with Grandpa Brendan who resents the boy's presence and his youth.
The characters are well drawn and compelling. A good read.
It's the end of the world. And everybody knows it. How will you spend your final hours? This is the premise of Christopher Brook’s first book, The Gertrude Threshold. It is beautifully written and focuses on a family of four mother, father, child, five years old, and grandfather, seventy years old. It is a fascinating exploration into the true essence of Human Beings. While you might expect this family to hold each other tight, share memories, and die together, quite the opposite happens. As is the case with most Human Beings, at the core, the members of this family are selfish. When self-preservation is not an option, self-satisfaction is next up.
For many years, mankind has been aware of the exact date when all life will cease to exist. Just beneath our character’s warm exteriors of acceptance, lays a cold layer of desperation. We join the mother and the father as they spend their final hours doing what the promise of death empowers them to do. Things that the hope of life would never allow. Meanwhile, grandfather is stuck caring for his young grandson. Physically he may be with him, but mentally he is far, far away.
I really enjoyed the style Christopher uses to tell this story. It is well paced and riveting. Although the subject matter is dark and depressing, there are definite times of tenderness and discovery, as well as some heart pounding moments of pure suspense. You do not have to be a fan of science fiction to enjoy this book. I am very excited for Christopher and eagerly await his next project.
